Students of American Kenpo come from all walks of life: students, housewives, construction workers, nurses, policemen, senior citizens, and children. Age, sex, or natural ability is never a negative factor, anyone can learn these skills.

Besides the basic Stances, Blocks, Strikes, and Footwork that characterize most martial arts, the core structure of American Kenpo is a set of 154 self-defense techniques and 96 extensions that defend against a wide range of situations. These core techniques are taught as the student progresses through the system, from belt level to belt level, formally ending at 5th degree Black Belt. After 5th degree, time in rank and contribution to the art provide allow for promotions up to 9th degree.

People always ask, "How long will it take me to get a Black Belt?" The answer is "It varies", but a reasonable expectation for someone who has never studied before  and trains 2 to 3 times a week is a minimum of three (3) years - Most take longer. Regardless, getting your Black belt is just one step in your hopeful lifelong  journey in the arts.
