 Children's Class Focus

For Children, we believe there are two main reasons for parents to consider a Martial Arts program;

  • To help teach them Life Skills and discipline

  • To teach them Physical Skills, one of which is self defense.

Whether old or young, our goal is to help the student become focused not only in physical aspects of karate and self defense, but to become a well rounded individual.

Life Skills include concentration, self control, patience, and confidence. The idea with our classes, and this motivation, is to reinforce what is already being taught at home. Martial arts classes can be a valuable tool for helping to really drive home the points you make at home in a very real way.

Physical Skills include improved coordination, increased strength and stamina, increased flexibility, and most obviously, martial arts and self defense knowledge.

To achieve the above, we emphasize three “Steps to Excellence”

Focus to Learn
Eyes                             - Watch Teachers and Instructors
Mind                            - Listen to teachers and instructors
Body                            - Posture Helps Concentration

Self-Discipline to Improve
Responsibility             - You are In Charge of Yourself
Do Positive                 - Do What You Know You Should Do
Do No Negative          - Do Not Do What You Shouldn’t

Self-Confidence to Feel Good

Believe In Yourself     - Always Think, "I Can Do This"
Be Positive                 - Think Good Thoughts, and Act Properly
Be Kind                     - Respect Yourself and Others

Typical Class Format / Content

  • Warm-up – Each class starts with a number of warm-up and stretching exercises to prepare you to participate safely in the class.

  • Karate Basics – Kenpo karate, as are all martial art, is based on a set of basic movements, blocks and strikes that can be compared to letters of the alphabet. The knowledge and combination of this alphabet of movements is what helps students progress in the art. These basic movements are divided into four main areas:

• Stances and Foot Movements

• Blocking

• Upper body strikes  - Punches, other Hand Strikes, Elbows, ...

• Lower Body Strikes - Kicks, Knees, ...

  • Karate Games – these are used in the Tigers classes. We make use of physical games and drills to keep the children moving, interested and having fun, and to improve their physical and mental dexterity.

  • Forms (Katas) - these are a combination of basic movements in an order that allows easy learning. They begin as a few simple movements strung together (the basics above), and increase in complexity as students advance. They help with memory and coordination, as well as providing an imaginary encounter with different opponents.

  • Self Defense Techniques – The techniques consist of defined defensive movements aimed at different situations. Over time, they will make their own techniques and react instinctively in any given situation.

  • Karate History / Manners / Health – this is a portion of the class, typically near the end, but sometimes at various parts of the class, where we briefly review what we have learned, discuss Martial Arts history and facts, and with the Children, discuss good traits, and manners., and nutrition information Examples might be; “Only practice Karate in class, or with Mom and Dad”, “We only use Karate in self defense”, “We help at home without being asked”, etc ….

Our Tiger Programs

Little Tigers

   - Mondays or Wednesdays from 4:00 to 4:45

This program is for children ages 3 to 4, and is a fun way to work on developing motor skills, coordination and balance. This includes drills for agility, strength, speed, reaction, etc. Even though some drills appear not to be karate related, they all contribute in some ways to the development of your children's motor skills, which in the long run help to develop their karate techniques. Although the children will learn some dynamic martial arts movements, they learn that there is much more involved than punching and kicking. They learn how to follow directions, the importance of listening to others,  focus, agility, balance and coordination.

Class Size is purposely limited to Six (6) children

Tigers

  - Wednesday or Friday from 4:45 to 5:45

  - Intermediate Class Tuesdays from 4:30 to 5:30.

This program is for children ages 4 to 6, and is more disciplined and focused than the Little Tigers classes. At this age, the children are more focused and interested in learning martial arts movements as oppose to the games designed for the younger children. Although the Tigers program does include certain games and exercises, they are tailored to their age group. Every class is designed to increase their knowledge in a fun way. Besides the physical, emphasis is placed on concentration, perseverance, respect, patience, and self-control.

Class Size is purposely limited to Twelve (12) children

Our Junior Program

Kenpo Juniors

-Beginners classes Thursdays from 5:00 to 6:00, OR  Fridays from 6:00 to 7:00

-Intermediate classes Mondays from 4:45 to 5:45, OR Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7:00.

This program is for children ages 7 to 12. Here the children are expected to be more disciplined due to their being older and more mature.  Although all the mental attributes are stressed, physical movements are very important in this program. More physical contact is allowed, and Self defense is emphasized. Heavy emphasis is placed on the true value of the martial arts and about respect, and to not ever use what they learn in an aggressive manner -  except in Self Defense.

Class Size is purposely limited to Fifteen (15) children
